National Carbon Capture Center hits key technology testing milestone

The start of 2024 has marked a key milestone for the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC), reaching over 150,000 testing hours earlier this year. The NCCC continues to lead the way when it comes to developing cutting-edge global technologies, like the KC8 carbon capture technology.

This testing helps advance cost-effective and commercially viable carbon management technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from fossil-based power plants and industrial sources to propel them towards deployment.  The NCCC attributes this significant milestone to the exceptional workforce at the internationally known U.S Department of Energy (DoE) test facility.

The March-April issue of the Carbon Capture Journal highlights that “through the testing and development of more than 75 new technologies, the center has already reduced the projected cost of CO2 capture from fossil-based power generation by more than 40%”.

Currently, nine technologies evaluated at the NCCC have been scaled up or are ready to be demonstrated at 10-plus megawatts. The real-life industrial operating conditions plus the infrastructure to evaluate cutting-edge technologies for scale-up, makes the NCCC the perfect environment to accelerate technology development.

KC8 and the National Carbon Capture Center

KC8 was awarded funding through the ARPA-E Phase 2 FLExible Carbon Capture and Storage (FLECCS) program through the DoE in 2023. After excellent results from Phase 1 development work, we are now working towards installation at the NCCC later in 2024. This allows the KC8 carbon capture technology to become part of the next generation of testing  completed by the NCCC.

We look forward to continuing our work with the NCCC throughout 2024 and beyond.
